The Benefits of Installing Mulch
If you are not a fan of pulling weeds, mulch is a must. It is often described as the gardener's best friend. A three-inch layer of mulch prevents weed seeds from growing and crowding out your plants for water, sunlight, and nutrients. Installing mulch will keep your soil warm into the fall as the temperatures cool down, extending the livelihood of your plants in the cooler weeks.
How to Calculate the Amount of Mulch Needed
The landscapers recommend spreading mulch three inches deep to gain the best effects (keeping the soil moist and weed-free). One cubic yard of mulch will cover 9 square feet of area, three inches deep (3' X 3' X 3"), so you can expect to need approximately one cubic yard of mulch for every 100 feet you wish to cover.
